The huge artificial lake sprawling northwest of Ajmer beside the road to Pushkar, known as Ana Sagar , was laid out by the Hindu Raja Anaji between 1135 and 1150. A long embankment, or bund , on its southwest shore moderated the flow of the river through the city and it was on top of this parapet, exposed to the cooling breezes off the water, that Shah Jehan chose to erect a line of exquisite white marble pavilions as summer shelters. Modelled on the Diwan-I-Am in Delhi's Red Fort, the five Baradaris were later converted into offices, libraries and houses, before Curzon had them restored in 1899. Today, four remain beautifully preserved, standing in the shade of trees and ornamental gardens (the former Daulat Bagh ) planted by Jehangir. To find them, turn left at the bottom of the hill as you arrive in Ajmer from Pushkar, and left again 400m later, through the park. The best time to come is an hour or so before sunset, when the colors on the lake and polished stone of the Baradaris are sublime. Back
