Ajmer's railway
station is in the centre of town, with regular services from Delhi,
Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Cittor and Kota. The state bus stand ,
with an exhaustive array of routes, is inconveniently situated on the northeast
edge of town, 2km from the railway station. Tempos and auto-rickshaws connect
the two; auto-rickshaws cost around Rs25. Approaching town from the south, most
buses stop at a string of large intersections en route, but don't be tempted to
get off before the bus stand as transport into town from these places can be
thin on the ground.
Seats on
private buses - many of which have connecting services from Pushkar -
can be reserved at Ajmer bus station, Pushkar hotels, or at any of the
travel agents along Kutchery Road between the state bus stand and
railway station. |
The State Bank of India, between the tourist office and state bus stand, will change Thomas Cook and American Express (but not Visa) travelers' cheques. A more central place to change money is the Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, on Station Road. Ajmer's chief attractions lie within walking distance of each other, in the centre of town, and are easily visited in half a day. To rent a bicycle , there are a couple of places just west of Delhi Gate (expect to pay about Rs3/hr). Fares for cycle rickshaws, more popular here than auto-rickshaws, should be negotiated in advance. If you want to dump your gear while you look around, head for the left luggage cloakroom just inside the main entrance at the railway station.
