While Chittaurgarh's mid- and upper-range hotels cost a little more than elsewhere, places at the lower end of the price scale are pretty dingy. This is one place budget travelers might want to splash out. As for food, both the Pratap Palace and Meera have popular non-veg restaurants, of the dimly lit variety where traveling businessmen indulge in chicken eating and beer drinking. A more respectable, and cheaper, option is the Ratu Raj Vatika, across town.

They specialize in traditional wedding feasts, but also have an excellent little pure-veg restaurant inside with tables spread over a lawn. The paneer dishes are particularly good, and you can get a range of delicious thalis for under Rs50. To find it, head up the insalubrious-smelling lane opposite the bus stand and follow the signboards in red Hindi writing.

Chetak , Neemuch Road, opposite the railway station phone 01472/41588 or 9. A notch more comfortable than the Shalimar opposite, with larger rooms and uniformed room boys, and a busy little restaurant downstairs. Best of the bunch immediately outside the railway station. Rs300-600.

Meera , Neemuch Road, 500m south of the Chetak phone 01472/40266, fax 41427. The Pratap 's main competitor: larger, and with a more institutional decor. "Special deluxe" rooms have bathtubs. Good restaurant. Rs400-900.

Padmini , Chanderiya Road phone 01472/41718. On the Ajmer road, just across the Bairach River. Chittor's biggest hotel is a modern wedding bhavan on the outskirts, with large but overpriced rooms and views of the concrete factory. Fifty percent discounts if you haggle. Rs400-900.

Pratap Palace , Shri Gurukul Road, opposite the GPO phone 01472/40099, fax 41042. Frayed around the edges, but acceptable, with a relaxing garden and popular restaurant. Their "deluxe" rooms boast raunchy Krishna murals and plum-coloured satin bed covers, but the "ordinary" ones are much better value. Rs300-900.

RTDC Panna , Station Road phone 01472/41238. One of RTDC's shabbier places, although the deluxe rooms are passable. Hopeless restaurant. Up to Rs900.
