Buses from Jhunjhunu and Nawalgarh (at least hourly), as well as Jaipur and Bikaner (3 daily) stop at Sonthalia Gate in the east of town. From Fatehpur, most buses pull in at a stand in the centre, just off the main bazaar. Jeeps ply the same routes. Mandawa's accommodation covers the full range and is plentiful, although you'll save yourself a march around town by phoning ahead as the hotels and guesthouses are spread out.

Castle Mandawa phone 01592/23124, fax 23171, www.castlemanadawa.com . The castle is the real thing and the rooms, complete with alcoved sitting areas, murals and period furniture, are luxurious enough, but there's something hollow about the whole experience. Turbaned Nepali waiters perform nightly Rajasthani cabarets for tour groups, and the approaches are filled with shops selling fake antiques. Rs2500 and upwards.

Desert Resort , 1km south of town phone 01592/23151 or 23514. Award-winning "tourist hamlet", sealed off from the outside world, with its own pool. The kind of place, with its expensively designed cow-dung covered walls, that looks exquisite in interiors magazines (the "tribal" murals are wonderful) but feels contrived here in rural Rajasthan. Rs1500 and upwards.

Mandawa Haveli, near Sonthaliya Gate phone 01592/23088, hotelmandawahaveli@yahoo.com . Comfortable rooms, all en suite and luxuriously furnished, in recently renovated haveli . The suites on the upper storey (especially "Nilas") are much the nicest. Rs900-1500.

Mandawa Heritage , Mukandgarh Road phone 01592/23742, fax 23243. A turn-of-the-twentieth-century mansion with attractively furnished rooms, on the quiet south side of town. The quoted tariffs are a bit steep, but a feigned walk-out will bring them down. Rs300-900.

Shekhawati , near Government Veterinary Hospital, Mukandgarh Road phone 01592/23036. Small, friendly budget guesthouse run by a garrulous retired banker. His rooms (en suite or cheaper non-attached) are neat and clean, but again, the prices are a touch ambitious. Tasty meals on request. Rs100-400.
