Mount Abu's predominantly middle-class Indian visitors are typically hard to please when it comes to food, so standards are exceptionally high and prices low in the numerous restaurants dotted along Nakki Road. Competition is stiffest between the squeaky-clean pure-veg Gujarati thali joints, most of which have indoor seating, but you can eat top-notch south Indian snacks and spicy rice-plate meals al fresco at the terrace cafés between the bazaar and the lake, and there are plenty of busy ice-cream stalls towards the waterfront. The classier hotels serve alcohol , also available at the wine and beer shops opposite the Veena at the bottom of town.

Kanak Dining Hall , near the bus stand. Arguably the best Gujarati thalis in town; at Rs50 per head, not the cheapest option, but impeccably hygienic, carefully prepared dishes, and "unlimited" portions.

Jodhpur Bhojnalaya , near taxi stand. The only place in town where you can eat authentic Rajasthani food, famous for its definitive dal batti , which comes with full veg thali and churma (crumbly, sweet wheat-flour balls flavored with cardamom) for Rs40. Highly recommended, but very heavy on ghee and spices.

Veena , Nakki Lake Road. Open-air seating next to the main road. Quintessentially tacky Mount Abu (bright lights and the latest filmi hits blaring out), but the fast food is second to none, and they have a welcome open fire on the terrace most evenings. Try their tangy pao bhaji or melt-in-the-mouth paper dosas, praised by no less than the PM himself, who eats here during his annual holidays.
