Ajmer is on the main Delhi-Ahmedabad train line, but there are considerable variations between the journey times of services passing through here. For Delhi, by far the fastest and most comfortable option is the air-conditioned Ajmer-New Delhi Shatabdi Express (#2016; Mon-Sat), which departs at 3.30pm and arrives 6hr 45min later at 10.15pm.

There's also a slower overnight service, the Ahmedabad-Delhi Mail (#9105), leaving at 8.33pm and arriving at 5.20am the following morning, but the easiest train to get a reservation for at short notice is Porbander-Delhi Express (#9263; Tues & Sat only), which leaves at 11am and reaches Delhi Sarai Rohilla 9hrs later.

Of the seven or eight daily trains to Jaipur , the Shatabdi Express is once again the quickest, taking just under two hours; alternatively, catch the cheaper Ajmer-Jaipur Link Express (#2414A) at 1.45pm, which takes just thirty minutes longer. Heading in the opposite direction, the Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Ahmedabad Express (#9943) is the best train for Udaipur , starting from Ajmer at 7.50am and arriving 10hr 10min later at 6pm.

The computerized reservations hall is on the first floor of the main railway station's south wing; get there early in the morning to avoid long queues, or shell out a little extra for a travel agent to buy your ticket through the back door.
