Jaisalmer's only train connection is to Jodhpur, more than 250km east. Two trains cover the route each day; the fastest is the 10.30pm departure, which gets in to Jodhpur at 5.30am the following morning. The slower passenger train leaves at 7.15am, and arrives at 3.15pm. Book tickets at the station, or save yourself the trip down there by reserving through a reputable agent such as the Paradise Hotel . If you catch the night train, take along plenty of warm clothes and a sleeping bag as temperatures drop to almost freezing point in the winter.

All other long-distance trips involve tedious bus journeys. The RSRTC bus stand, round the corner from the station, has departures for Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Barmer, Mount Abu and Ahmedabad. "Deluxe" private buses are the best option, and leave from the crossroads just outside Amar Sagar Gate, where you'll find the booking offices.

There are buses to Jodhpur (hourly; 5hr 30min), Barmer (hourly; 3hr), Bikaner (3 daily; 7hr) and one or two daily to Jaipur (13hr), Delhi (20hr), Mumbai (30hr), Ajmer (12hr 30min), Pushkar (8hr 30min), Mount Abu (11hr) and Udaipur (14hr). Frequent but much slower local buses, which can't be booked, use the stand a little northeast of the crossroads. They include three daily to Khuhri (1hr 30min).

The airport , 8km west of town on the Sam road, has been closed to domestic services since the recent intensification of troubles with neighboring Pakistan, but you can reconfirm and book flights to and from other cities at the Indian Airlines office in the RTDC Moomal Tourist Bungalow , on the west edge of town (daily 9.30am-1pm & 2-5.30pm; phone & fax 02922/51912).
