Buses leave Mount Abu for Abu Road every hour until 9pm; Jeeps leave when full (from opposite the bus stand), and taxis are available on request (from the junction at the southeastern corner of the polo ground; Rs200 for a full car).

For train travelers, there's an information and booking office , or "Out Agency" (Mon-Sat 9am-1pm & 2-4pm) directly opposite the police station, next to the bus stand. It has quotas for services to Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, but not Jodhpur, so if you're heading northeast towards Jaisalmer, you'll have to head back down to Abu Road railway station to book an onward ticket.

The most convenient service to Ahmedabad is the daily Delhi-Ahmedabad Mail #9106, which passes through at 1.10pm and arrives 4hr 20min later. In the other direction, of the three trains to Delhi , by far the fastest is the Rajdhani Express #2958, which leaves Abu Road at 8.35pm and arrives in New Delhi at 7.50am the following morning.

En route it calls at Ajmer (4hr 20min) and Jaipur (6hr 20min), but at inconvenient hours of the night; the same applies to the four other express services covering this route, so for these two destinations you're better off catching the bus, which will get you in at a more civilized hour.

For Jodhpur , the only daily train is the Suryanagari Express #4846, which departs at 1.50am. To catch it, you'll have to take the last (9pm) bus to Abu Road, and hole up in one of the station's grim little waiting rooms - or catch a bus.

Government buses , 50 percent pricier, 30 percent slower, but 100 percent safer than their private counterparts, run services from the state bus stand, about 200m southeast of the polo ground on the main road. Most buses to Ahmedabad go via Palanpur (3hr, change for Bhuj) and Mehsana (4hr), with a couple continuing to Vadodara (9hr), and one to Surat (12hr). Other destinations include Udaipur, Jaipur via Ajmer (7hr 30min) and Chittaurgarh (2 daily; 9hr), with morning departures to Delhi, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer via Barmer (8hr).

Mount Abu's private buses run to Ahmedabad (6 daily; 6hr), Udaipur (2 daily; 4hr 30min), Jaipur (1 nightly; 11hr 30min), Ajmer (1 nightly; 9hr 30min), Jodhpur (1 nightly; 9hr 30min), and Mumbai (1 nightly; 17hr). For timings and information, go to Gujarat Travels in the main bazaar, just along from the state bus stand.
