The range of hotels in Sawai Madhopur includes something for all budgets, generally increasing in price and luxury the closer you get to the park. RTDC hotels are often cheaper between April and June.

Though the food isn't special in the cheaper lodges, you'll be glad it's there at all; there's precious little alternative other than two small dhabas on the main bazaar, between the train and bus stations. Of the pair, the Hotel Argawal looks the less hygienic, but serves the best food, including delicious alu paratha with fresh curd for breakfast, and the usual gamut of curried seasonal vegetables and hot chapati during the rest of the day.

Ankur Resort , Ranthambore Road, 1.5km from town phone 07462/20792, fax 20697. Modern complex of clean, comfortable rooms with baths in the main building, or pricier, more spacious chalets with verandas around the back. Filling meals served in its dining room. Discounts out of season, when the overland groups who usually stay here dry up. Rs400-900.

Chinkala , 14 Indira Colony, Civil Lines phone 07462/20340 or 22642. Mostly large, but poorly maintained rooms in a suburban house on the southwest side of town.

Similar standard to the Vishal , although slightly more expensive because of the quieter location. Rs100-300.

Hammir Wildlife Resort , Ranthambore Road, 7km from town phone 07462/20562, fax 20697. Reasonable fall-back if the Ankur is full; the rooms are far better value than the outside "cottages". Rs600-900.

RTDC Castle Jhoomar Baori , on a hillside 7km out of town phone 07462/20495. Former royal hunting lodge on a great hilltop site inside the park, with views from a roof terrace over woodland and escarpment. The rooms are plain but good value. The only drawback is the food, which is a lot less inspiring than the location. Book ahead; discounts April-June. Rs600-1500.

RTDC Vinayak , Ranthambore Road, 8km from town phone 07462/21333. Somewhat austere modern building, with large, simply furnished rooms that are a good deal considering their peaceful location and proximity to the park. Rs900-1500. more...
